Financial Aid

At the ICU Graduate School, we have various scholarships to enhance student life and research. Approximately a hundred students will be eligible for our scholarships each of which covers at least one third of the annual tuition and facility fee.

About Scholarship Grants

※No return payment is required.

For Master's course regular students only

Students are granted up to 1/3 of the annual tuition based on academic performance and financial need. Applications are accepted annually for one academic year. New students applying for this status are selected before matriculation.

The Graduate School Scholarships for New Students

Eligibility for this scholarship will be considered upon request in the admissions process.
ICU will notify applicants if they are chosen for the scholarship when it offers them admission to the Graduate School. Applicants are selected based on merit and financial need. New students need to pay a matriculation fee, tuition and facility fee before entering ICU, but those receiving these scholarships will be exempted the tuition and facility fees for their first term at ICU. The only school fee to be paid before matriculation will be the matriculation fee.
Note: This scholarship will be eligible for Master's course regular students only.

ICU Continuing Student Scholarships

Students are granted up to 1/3 of the annual tuition based on academic performance and financial need. Applications are accepted annually for one academic year. New students applying for this status are selected before matriculation. Note: This scholarship will be eligible for basically Japanese nationals and permanent/long-term residents.

For Master's course students of foreign nationals

ICU Non-Japanese Student Scholarship

Non-Japanese students who enroll at ICU for degrees can apply for this tuition reduction scholarship after matriculation. The amount of the scholarship (one third, one half or two thirds of the annual tuition) will be determined by academic performance and financial need. Note: This scholarship will be eligible for Master's course regular students only.

Government Scholarship (For foreign nationals)

The Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho:MEXT) Scholarship

For those who wish to receive a full scholarship including full tuition and facilities fees and monthly stipend, ICU recommend you apply for the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship. ICU Graduate School has been accepting international students who receive this scholarship for over 8 years.

ICU accepts mainly 3 types of the MEXT scholarships.
1) Embassy recommendation: which you apply for through an embassy or consulate general of Japan overseas (application period Spring)
2) University recommendation: which you apply for through a partner university of ICU (application period: winter)
3) "kokunai saiyo": which you apply for after entrance to ICU (application period: autumn~winter)

This scholarship is targeted for those research that take place in Japan. ICU is renowned for offerings of English-instructed courses and one-to-one guidance from professors. If you wish to know more details about application deadline and forms,

About Scholarship Loans

For Master's and Doctoral course regular students only (for Japanese nationals and permanent / long-term residents)

ICU Long-term Loan

The University stands as guarantor for students borrowing up to the amount of the annual tuition from a designated Japanese bank. Repayment starts after graduation, to be paid off within twenty years of the first loan contract. The university pays for the interest during the student's enrollment at ICU. Applications are accepted on a yearly basis.

Scholarships Offered by the Japan Student Services Organization (Loan)

Two kinds of loan programs, one at no interest and the other with interest, are available for Japanese students. Both allow students up to 20 years after graduation to repay the loan.

About Other Scholarship and Grant

For Master's and Doctoral course regular students only

ICU Research Scholarship for Doctoral Students

A scholarship of up to ¥127,000 per year is granted to students attending the doctoral program to support their research. Students may apply annually up to three times during his/her residence.

For Doctoral's course regular students only

The Graduate School Students Research Presentation Grant

Graduate students presenting their research to an academic society are eligible for a grant of ¥30,000 per occasion. Grants may be awarded up to twice to Master' course students and up to three times to Doctoral course students during their respective normative times. To students registered beyond their respective normative times, grants may be awarded once per academic year.
