Mr. Richi Miyake, a student of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, ICU was presented a certificate of appreciation on June 12 (Sun) by the head of Mitaka Fire Department, Tokyo Fire Department for saving a man's life.

At around ten thirty in the morning on June 5 (Sun), a man who was participating in a Sunday service at ICU church suddenly fell. Mr. Miyake, together with his younger brother Noa Miyake, a student of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology and ICU church member Ms. Hiromi Takano and others, quickly responded and gave chest compressions and used the automated external defibrillator (AED), while calling an ambulance to take him to a hospital. The man escaped death and is now on the way to recovery.

Upon receiving the certificate of appreciation, Mr. Miyake commented "When I saw the man fall, I was automatically calling out for ambulance and an AED, before thinking. It was my first time to actually give chest compressions or life-saving treatment to anybody, so I was scared and uncertain if I was really doing it right and if the man would revive. However, I had received the fire department's life-saving training as a member of the dormitory I was living in when I was an undergraduate. The training really helped to control myself and get calm. I am really thankful of the training I received at the dormitory. I hope my juniors who are living in the dormitory now will take the training seriously because they may encounter the same kind of situation like me."
