Special lecture by Mr. Tetsuo Kondo, Director of the UNDP Representation Office in Tokyo

On April 15 (Fri.), Director Tetsuo Kondo of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Representation Office in Tokyo was invited by the ICU Rotary Peace Center* to deliver an English lecture titled "MDGs to SDGs -Future We Want" as part of the course "Introduction to International Law" taught by Professor Osamu Arakaki (Major: Law, Director of Rotary Peace Center).

Director Kondo outlined the history of UNDP which is marking its 50th anniversary this year and its roles at the forefront of development. Based on his experience in Chad located in the Sahel region of Africa, where a number of conflicts and incidents are taking place, he also presented lessons learned from his hands-on mission at UNDP and outlooks for the future.

The lecture was moderated by Ms. Rebecca Gissing-Simms, ICU graduate student and 13th Rotary Peace Fellow* (Major: Public Policy, Social Research (Peace Studies Course)). Following Director Kondo's lecture, 14th Rotary Peace Fellow Mr. Abdullah Yusuf and Ms. Madeleine Logan (both from the major of Public Policy, Social Research (Peace Studies Course)) commented to deepen understanding on the activities of UNDP.

*ICU Rotary Peace Center and Rotary Peace Fellows

Rotary Peace Center was established on the ICU Campus under cooperation with Rotary International as one of the Rotary Peace Centers located also at six other graduate schools in five countries. Each year ICU accommodates around ten Rotary Peace Fellows at ICU Graduate School Arts and Sciences to provide opportunities to engage in research on international issues with an emphasis on peace and conflict resolution.
