With Universal Admissions, ICU is seeking students who have studied in various places around the world and who possess diverse backgrounds. This admissions system accommodates different language backgrounds and learning experiences, so that you can select the application method that is most appropriate for you. Through this system, we will work together to find the path that best enables you to make use of all of your rich experiences.

The number of students to be admitted:Approximately 90 students are accepted through the Universal Admissions* each year.
*April/September Admissions by Documentary Screening, April Admissions for Returnees, April Admissions for International Students by Documentary Screening/Interview, and September Admissions for International Students by Documentary Screening.

April/September Admissions by Documentary Screening

ICU seeks to admit students irrespective of nationality who can strive academically and personally at ICU, in line with its goal to cultivate responsible global citizens. Applicants for April/September Admissions by Documentary Screening undergo a documentary screening process, including the submission of standardized test scores, such as SAT, ACT, or IB. Admissions are based on holistic criteria with the goal to identify students who are able to perform at a superior level in a liberal arts environment. Moreover, coming from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds, students are expected to enrich the ICU student body with different and innovative ways in which to meet the challenges of the new global age.

Eligibility: Will complete or have completed an educational curriculum of 12+ years in Japan or a foreign county.

Selection: Documentary screening; IELTS/TOEFL, National examinations, etc. required.

Applicants who apply to ICU through April/September Admissions by Documentary Screening are those who should be able to take college level courses taught in English. Students entering through these means must complete the Japanese Language Programs (JLP) as part of their Graduation Requirements.

April Admissions for Returnees

Eligibility: Have been attending school(s) outside of the regular Japanese education system for at least two consecutive years in junior/senior high schools.

Selection: Examination and Interview, IELTS/TOEFL, etc. required.

April Admissions for International Students by Documentary Screening/Interview

September Admissions for International Students by Documentary Screening

Eligibility:Have been attending school(s) outside of the regular Japanese educational system for at least last six years.

Selection: Documentary screening/Interview(April), Documentary screening(September); EJU,* IELTS/TOEFL required.

* Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students.

Applicants who go through the above admission systems should be able to take college level courses taught in Japanese. Students entering through these means must complete the English for Liberal Arts Program (ELA) as part of their Graduation Requirements.
