Under tutorial guidance, students develop their ability to express themselves in written English.

The W-Courses were set up as specialized courses offered in English. It aims to improve students' writing and research skills by providing instruction and practice in discipline-specific writing in addition to the acquisition of content knowledge. As well as tutors at the Writing Support Desk, instructors leading these courses provide students with help in writing and encourage a participatory attitude in class. In this way, an organic link is made between support for students' overall writing skills and that provided by professors on papers' specific content. Students thus become able to express their ideas in a format that best fits their majors.

The W-Courses offer an opportunity for students to be trained in genre-specific writing (as opposed to basic academic writing in the ELA), and it fills the gap between first-year and senior thesis writing.
