September Students Welcome Event "Meet and Greet"
September 11, 2014
On September 6, the "Meet and Greet" event was held to welcome new September students and provide them the opportunity for exchange with the ICU community. Sixteen student staff planned and organized the event, and 66 new students attended.
Dean of Students Tatsuo Nunoshiba addressed the group to open the meeting, followed by Professor Richard L. Wilson's lecture on his specialty, Japanese culture and history. After lunch with the faculty including President Junko Hibiya and Vice President for Academic Affairs Anri Morimoto, the group visited Jindaiji in the vicinity.
Foreign students who were visiting a Buddhist temple for the first time carried out the rituals by following the student staff's example in purifying their hands and mouth and basking in the smoke from the incense burner to wish for improvement in their Japanese. They also learned aspects of Japanese culture such as Buddhist scriptures and omikuji (written oracle).
The new students were impressed with the visit to Jindaiji, and said they befriended many and found the food they tried delicious. On September 26, a similar exchange event for newcomers, "Dean's Reception 2014," will be held.
