Official name has been decided on for the provisionally called "New Building" that will illuminate the future of ICU
Update: February 9, 2022
The new building now under construction on the ICU Mitaka Campus has been given an official name.
Japanese name:
トロイヤー記念アーツ・サイエンス館
English name:
Troyer Memorial Arts and Sciences Hall
In deciding the name of the building, naming proposals were widely solicited from faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Following deliberations by the New Building Name Selection Committee, the official name has been finalized. We would like to thank you for the many proposals we received.
A place where arts and sciences are integrated
Troyer Memorial Arts and Sciences Hall will become a symbol of liberal arts where students foster intelligence and a rich humanity through an encounter with diverse and different academic disciplines.
The first floor will provide the Hub Central and Quadrangle, a space open to all students and faculty. The Hub Central combines a free space to relax between classes and research, and seminar rooms where you can bring in food and drinks. All facilities and functions of the current Science Hall including the faculty offices and laboratories will be relocated to the new building. In addition, the humanities and social sciences research centers as well as some administrative departments will also be relocated. Large classrooms for large-scale classes and lectures will be concentrated at the new building to increase opportunities for all students to visit it.
The glass-sided laboratories and Open Lab Space are designed so that scientific learning in liberal arts will blend into students' everyday lives and generate unexpected discoveries and encounters. This environment will become a place to realize "integration of interdisciplinary knowledge" as the only liberal arts college in Japan incorporating natural science education and research.
The late Dr. Maurice E. Troyer after whom the building is named was a renowned educator who arrived in Japan shortly after WWII. He contributed to envisioning the ideals of ICU by proposing that university education of the future "needs to inspire students to take interest in wider disciplines besides one's area of specialization, all the more to make one's specialized research more meaningful." Following in Dr. Troyer's footsteps, the facility is expected to function as a space that will generate various encounters and creative activities through academic exchange and human interaction, experienced in classes, research, and dialogue among students or between faculty and students.
Classes will take place in the Troyer Memorial Arts and Sciences Hall starting from AY2023.
