Kaori Shimazaki, CEO of SAKE Generation, Inc., is on a mission to share the allure of sake with the world and preserve Japan's rich cultural heritage for future generations. Her remarkable journey began with a spark of inspiration during her time at the University of Chicago's Executive MBA course, where she embarked on an entrepreneurial trajectory that led to the creation of the premium sake brand, ICHID°.

An Entrepreneurial Trajectory Launched by a Business Contest

In 2020, I and my team launched ICHID°, driven by a passion to introduce sake to a global audience. With tastings conducted in over 60 countries, we meticulously crafted a sake that resonates with people of diverse cultures and ages. The journey began during my tenure at the University of Chicago, where I participated in a worldwide business contest. Inspired by my experiences abroad and fueled by a desire to share Japan's finest offerings with the world, the idea for a sake-based business took root.

Despite facing stiff competition, my team advanced to the final round of the contest held in Chicago. Though we narrowly missed the top prize, the enthusiastic reception from judges and professors propelled me to forge ahead with my entrepreneurial vision. Establishing partnerships with sake breweries in Japan, particularly in Fukushima Prefecture, I navigated the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and successfully launched ICHID° in Japan and the US.

Freedom to Explore and Try New Experiences at ICU

My journey traces back to my formative years at International Christian University (ICU), where I nurtured a deep appreciation for global perspectives. Immersing myself in language learning and international studies, my curiosity knew no bounds. ICU provided a fertile ground for intellectual exploration, with professors like Nobuaki Takakura igniting my passion for economics and finance.

ICU's diverse course offerings, coupled with opportunities for international exchange, shaped my multifaceted worldview. From delving into the historical context of artworks to engaging in spirited debates with fellow students, ICU instilled in me a thirst for knowledge and a sense of camaraderie that endures to this day.

Find a Path that Combines Your Interests and Your Strengths

My advice to prospective ICU students echoes my own journey of self-discovery: understand your passions and strengths, and embrace the diverse perspectives that surround you. ICU's inclusive environment fosters deep connections and facilitates meaningful exchanges, laying the groundwork for personal and professional growth.

As SAKE Generation continues to expand its global footprint, I remains deeply grateful for my time at ICU. Armed with a wealth of experiences and a steadfast commitment to excellence, I stand as a testament to the transformative power of education and the enduring bonds forged at ICU.
