ICU-Senior High School Collaboration Project
ICU was established in 1953 as the first liberal arts college in Japan, founded on deep remorse for the tragedy inflicted by World War II, to nurture personnel who would contribute to building peace in the world. Since it was initiated in 2015, the ICU-Senior High School Collaboration Project aims to connect secondary and higher education on the theme of peace, based on our founding philosophy.

The University provides programs not only from its own perspectives, but shares issues in secondary education to collaborate in developing unique programs tailored to the needs of high schools. The program also serves as a means to offer society the outcome of our liberal arts education achieved through our distinct features such as diversity, dialogue and emphasis on critical thinking.

The liberal arts instruction at ICU requires each student to take an active part in the learning process. The ICU Global Challenge Forum introduces the proactive learning style in liberal arts to experience the infinite possibilities of the academic world to nurture the next generation with the potential to tackle real-world issues. It is an opportunity for senior high school students with diverse backgrounds from all over Japan to experience the small-group education and dialogue-oriented classes at ICU which is essential to liberal arts education.
By participating in this program, students will acquire the ability to think logically and critically, understand their place in the world and cultivate potential as responsible global citizens, the ultimate goal of the instruction offered at ICU.
Science Cafe at ICU
A series introducing faculty research in the natural sciences and liberal arts education
This program offers high school students a glimpse of the science experience at ICU. It will be an opportunity to see how the liberal arts framework across the sciences and arts incorporates science education in the curriculum. Faculty members introduce their research, with background information about why they chose to specialize in science, how they developed interest in their specialty, challenges they faced and roundabout routes they took. ICU faculty will talk about their experience in science and liberal arts in a way that can be easily understood by junior and senior high school students. The content will delve into the essence of each field in the natural sciences, so we recommend those who are especially interested in science or are trying to make a choice between the sciences and arts, to attend.
Reconsidering Peace in Liberal Arts: participatory workshop in English
Participatory workshop in English
This is an English Workshop co-organized with Middlebury College, an institution ranked within the top 10 liberal arts colleges in the U.S., and also one of ICU's partnership schools. It is a program arranged for Japanese high school students modeled after the Critical Issues Forum organized by Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, where high school students from all over the world assemble to discuss global disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation. Senior high school students experience the academic skills necessary for the learning in college and think about the complex issue of peace from diverse perspectives and cultivate the ability to grapple with this difficult theme from a liberal arts viewpoint.
