ICU students have a variety of extracurricular options in the arts, sports, academics and social fields. University events including the ICU Festival, Christian and International Weeks and the Dorm Festival are planned and carried out by student groups. Currently, there are over 50 officially recognized clubs and various independent groups that are very active.

Aikido

We tailor our practice menu for each individual, starting from basics in posture, ukemi (receiving technique), kumiwaza (practicing in pairs) and training with weapons. Every Friday, our Shihan leads practice. Apart from regular practice, we join other college aikido clubs for joint practice sessions and have camps twice a year in the spring and summer.

Shin Kali is a martial art originating in the Philippines aiming to promote physical and mental well-being by means of training in hunting techniques. We start by using sticks and then move on to self-defense techniques unarmed or with weapons.

We enjoy Latin American music and dance, especially the Samba. We perform at the annual Asakusa Samba Carnival held in August, said to be the largest such event held in the Northern hemisphere.

Hi! We're ICU LAMBS. We play and dance to Latin American music like the Samba. It's so fun playing music you don't often get to hear in daily life. Most of us joined this club as beginners. We are absolutely riveted by the rhythm of the music and enjoy connecting with the people and culture it represents. Activities

Shorinji Kempo is one of the nine Japanese grand martial arts. Movements consist mainly of Goho (hard) techniques such as strikes and kicks and Juho (soft) techniques or defense against various grabs and throws. Shorinji Kempo emphasizes the development of the mind with mental Zen-like elements in addition to physical training.

Training consists of four main parts.

Basics ... Learning basic movements such as strikes and kicks
Hokei ... Training in pairs to practice patterns in self defense
Randori ... Practical application of Hokei techniques wearing Bogu (protective gear).
Enbu ... Form of demonstration with two performers alternating as attacker and defender in a six-part program of hard and soft techniques to a predetermined battle. Literally translated "show fight," it is the form usually performed at competitions.

According to a questionnaire survey conducted by the Shorinji Kempo Federation of Japan headquarters in Tadotsu, Kagawa Prefecture, approximately 80% of those in Shorinji Kempo groups in college started as beginners when they joined. At ICU, most of us started out without experience, but we have been winning awards at national competitions every year since we founded our club in 2010. We welcome those who want to protect precious ones and themselves by learning self-defense techniques in Shorinji Kempo or those who are purely interested in building physical strength. Let's learn authentic skills together with the motto, "pursuing the essence!"

The history of the tennis club goes back to the founding days of ICU. For decades, our club has been playing with the great support of alumni. The men belong to the Kanto University 7th League and the women, the 5th League. We strive for promotion to a higher league and a higher position in individual matches every day.

You may imagine our training sessions to be rigorous, but we have a congenial atmosphere that allows you to befriend members regardless of age or experience. Most of our members are very serious about their studies, part-time work and study abroad, so we see it as a perfect environment for those seeking myriad opportunities.

Monthly climbing trips, camp during vacations and group climbs throughout the year. Camps usually are week-long trips with tents walking along mountain ridges in the Alps etc. Most of our climbs take place during the no-snow period, but we plan to revive activity in winter climbing, rock climbing and skiing. Regular meetings include basic training, reading maps, studying conditions in weather and rope work.

The Modern Music Society (Mumus) is the only jazz club at ICU. Our history dates back to the founding days.

We perform at the ICU Festival, at joint live sessions with other bands, YAMANO BIG BAND JAZZ CONTEST (YBBJC), and the Ota City University Jazz Festival.
We have played with notable musicians like Andy Martin(tb), Bill Reichenbach(tb), Gary Foster(as), Eric Marienthal(as), Wayne Bergeron(tp), Chuck Findley(tp) and Bobby Shew(tp).

We have two regular concerts a year. We also perform at the A Capella Café at the ICU Festival, entrance/ commencement ceremonies and the university service. We also go Christmas caroling. We sing from various genres of music including Negro spirituals, religious pieces, and Japanese songs.

The ICU Glee Club is the university's leading mixed voice chorus brimming with history. It was established at the same time as the university itself. All the members are ICU students, playing equal parts in club activities including conductors and pianists. Students can carefully and seriously study and create music together and have fun in the process. The club members participate in many events throughout the year. They are free to decide how often they want to participate and they can enjoy club activities in their own ways. If you want to continue singing in a chorus in college, if you just love singing, if you are interested in a chorus, if you want to start some kind of music or organize events or run an organization, or if you just want to find a place to belong to for now, the Glee Club is for you. Traditional art of Nagauta with Shamisen and uta. Our international shamisen players create sophisticated harmony in our performances. You can acquire shamisen skills you'll be proud of abroad. Most of us started as beginners, so don't worry if you have no experience.

We perform at our regular concerts twice a year (April and October), open a classical music café during the ICU Festival and also play at the Christmas candlelight service. In 1992, we joined the ICU Wadaiko (Japanese drum) Club for performances in the U.S. and also performed in Germany in 2009 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Mendelssohn.

Pop Music Band (Melody Union)

Regular campus live sessions are held in the West Wing of the Diffendorfer Memorial Hall, multi-purpose hall. We have our own practice room in the basement of the New D-Kan. Each band reserves the room to practice. When it's not occupied, you can set up a jam session with members.

Every Friday from 13:00~, we hold a meeting in the third floor terrace of the New D-kan. We don't practice on set days, but each band practices before regular live sessions.

Weekly GIANTS Co. publishes the The Weekly GIANTS at ICU. Since its foundation in 1976, we are a self-supporting operation, funding our printing fees with subscription and advertisement fees, without any subsidies from the university. In 2014, we launched the News Site The Weekly GIANTS ONLINE 2014 to provide information about the university effectively.

Our main activities include writing articles based on interviews and reporting for the printed The Weekly GIANTS and the website The Weekly GIANTS ONLINE. Articles are checked for typographical errors several times, so you needn't worry if you have no experience. You are welcome if you want to brush up your writing skills, or want to be a professional writer.

We also have editors, photographers, and designers who work on the layout and illustrations for printed and digital media. If you're interested in media, come see us in room 372 of the new Diffendorfer Hall West Wing(new D-kan)!

TEDxICU's philosophy is to broaden perspectives and awareness within ICU; connect students with the community outside ICU; and, form a forum for members to challenge new things, grow and learn. We also prepare for the TEDxICU event.

TEDx has been established in more than 130 countries based on the spirit of TED's "IdeasWorthSpreading." The x means that the group is independent. Although it has been formally licensed by TED, it remains an independent organization in terms of management and personnel. Every TEDx has its own color, but like TED, it invites speakers from various areas, to enhance exchange. Other than staff who work with us the whole year, we also have volunteers for events and the audience. Come see us!

We have weekly discussions on themes that members are interested in. Study Tours Abroad
The study tours abroad once or twice a year are our greatest event. We plan our trips by ourselves, choosing the destination, finding accommodation, and making appointments with local schools and organizations. During our stay, we share our impressions and questions. We're not there as tourists, but we learn and experience things we treasure for life. (Countries we've visited: Korea, Nepal, Czech Republic and Poland, Cambodia, etc.)
