Update: January 21, 2018

Tetsuo Kondo, Director of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Tokyo, gave an open lecture entitled "SDGs: UNDP and Human Security" on Wednesday, January 17, in the class of Professor Osamu Arakaki (Major: Law, Public Policy, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Peace Studies) on Global Civil Society. The lecture was part of the United Nations Academic Impact, an initiative to align institutions of higher learning throughout the world with the United Nations and with each other.

Mr. Kondo spoke on the etymology of the word "development," the significance of human security and UNDP initiatives in attaining Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Providing explanations on projects in countries such as Kosovo and Chad, he stressed that development is the best way to prevent conflict.

At the end of the lecture, participants asked questions such as "Is there a means to accurately measure poverty in the world?" and "What is UNDP doing about climate change?" and opinions were actively exchanged.
