On Friday, February 8, a Faculty Development (FD) seminar titled "How We should Support Students with Developmental Disabilities" was held featuring the speaker Yukimi Nishimura, Associate Professor and Director of Accessibility and Communication Support Office of University of Toyama.
Prof. Nishimura focused on four developmental disabilities, SLD, ADHD, ASD, and DCD and gave specific examples to explain the characteristics of each of the disabilities, how those characteristics impair the school life of students suffering from those disabilities, what the most reasonable approaches are to give consideration to students with disabilities, and how we can determine the approaches to help them.
She further explained the support system in place at University of Toyama using actual examples. She stressed the importance of developing a learning environment for such students and dialogue between those students and faculty members.
