ICU Student Wins Student Presentation Award at International Conference on Emerging Technologies for Communications (ICETC) 2021

Update: December 23, 2021

ICU Graduate School student, Mr. Tatsuya Oryu (5-year program student in Mathematics and Information Science, Natural Sciences ) won the Student Presentation Award for his research presentation at the International Conference on Emerging Technologies for Communications (ICETC) 2021 held online in December 2021.

Research theme:

Title: Simulation evaluation of RPKI deployment based on cost-benefit analysis
Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI) is a mechanism to realize secure Internet routing.

The benefits obtained from deploying RPKI depend on the deployment status of other network organizations.

In the current situation, the deployment status is not proceeding well. One of the reason for this is said to be that the decision of deployment is left up to individual organizations, and it is representing a chicken-and-egg situation.

This research quantitatively evaluates the costs and benefits of RPKI deployment through multi-agent simulation by using Internet topology. As a result, it was discovered that when the deployment cost is below a certain level, primarily deploying RPKI in the largest networks would allow deployment in other networks as well.

Comment from Ms. Oryu:

I enjoy taking walks, and there are times I only realize how much I've walked when I look up and see the scenery around me. Receiving this award felt very similar to these walks - an unexpected yet rewarding result brought by the casual but steady steps I take every day.

I would like to express my gratitude to my advisor Prof. Ishibashi, along with many others for their help and support.

I hope that my research inspires organizations to take more actions for the improved security of Internet routing, as malicious misrouting occurs very often today. I also hope that this topic helps develop students' interest in Information Science, making it a more popular major at ICU.

Although I do not have much time left at ICU, I will continue to take small steps going forward, valuing each progress at my own pace.
