ICU Community Collaboration Event: Mitaka City Daini Elementary School Visits ICU
Update: December 15, 2023

On Wednesday, December 6, we received 136 sixth graders from Mitaka City Daini Elementary School for their university visit. This event was planned as part of the children's career education, and was realized with the cooperation of the ICU Student organization Manabi-ai and student staff active in the open campus.
The event consisted of two parts. The first part was a campus tour guided by student staff, with a tour course for each theme, "Learning at ICU" and "Life at ICU," according to the children's interests. The second part of the event was a live talk by six student representatives and a question-and-answer session with the participating children in the Auditorium of Diffendorfer Memorial Hall East Wing.
Student staff members gently guided elementary school students as they toured the campus. It was impressive to see how elementary school students were listening intently to the representative students talk about "a day in the life of a university student," "what they are studying at university," and "their dreams for the future". The content of the live talk was based on a collection of about 30 questions submitted in advance by elementary school students.

In the Q&A session, questions that could not be heard during the live talk session, such as "What was the most difficult experience at ICU" and "Club activities, relationships among students at ICU" were asked.
Comments from the children who participated in the program
- I was able to learn more about ICU. What surprised me the most was that the university allows students to decide their own classes and class schedule. This event made me want to enroll in ICU.
- During my visit to ICU, I was surprised to learn that university is a fun place where you can learn what you like. I was also struck by the fact that it is a place where you can meet people.
- Thanks to this event, I no longer worry about college and I have a longing for it. I was most impressed by the words "freedom and responsibility". I decided that I will do my best and do not forget what I have learned.
- ・Before I visited ICU, I thought college was all about studying. However, through this event, I realized that university is a place of fun and freedom. And I also learned that it is a tough place. I would like to take advantage of this experience as a reference when choosing my future.
Comments from students who participated as a staff
- All of the questions we received in advance were thought-provoking and very enjoyable to answer. We were also very impressed that children were very proactive in asking questions during the live talk.
- I appreciate the opportunity to express what I feel ICU is like as a university.
- I was very excited to have the opportunity to speak about my own experiences in front of so many elementary school students for the first time.
- I was very happy that the students were interested in my favorite university and listened to me!
- I was very impressed that students spoke more actively than ICU students during the Q&A session!
We will continue to hold community collaboration events with elementary and junior high schools.
