Obituary: Yoshio Niwa, Professor Emeritus, Passes Away at 91

Yoshio Niwa, Professor Emeritus of International Christian University (ICU) (1957-1998), passed away on October 7, 2024 at the age of 91. A funeral service will be held on October 9.

Professor Niwa graduated from the Physical Education Department of Nippon College of Physical Education in 1957, and was employed at ICU as Assistant in the Department of Health and Physical Education. He became Lectuer in 1960, and acquired his master's degree in 1969 at Michigan State University. He was promoted to Professor in 1977. Professor Niwa is largely responsible for developing the basis for the ICU's PE curriculum with the major objective of nurturing well-rounded students. He was not only Head of the Department Health and Physical Education and Director of the ICU Gymnasium but also Dean of Students and Director of the Lifelong Learning Programs. The academic interest of Professor Niwa has been the effect of physical exercises to the human body and health education, and he contributed to the substantiation of the local social education and development of sports activities to the Mitaka City and the Toyko YMCA. He contributed immensely to the education, research, and administration at ICU for 41 years.
