Unlike the usual open campus, this mini-open campus shined a spotlight on the Natural Sciences majors at ICU (mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, information science) along with the Environmental Studies major.
Beginning with the question "What is a liberal arts education?", the event offered research introductions in the natural sciences, as well as stories from students who actually chose these majors about how their high school experiences led them to their current paths. From multiple angles, participants were able to deepen their understanding of what it is like to study science at ICU.
Many attendees also joined the special laboratory tours, which are not open during regular open campus events, and were able to view the research facilities and equipment firsthand.
Feedback indicated that the day was extremely helpful not only for those interested in both the sciences and the humanities, but also for those planning to pursue science, as they consider their future academic direction.

Participant Comments *Selected excerpts

  • It was great to learn about the research being conducted by ICU faculty and students. I now have a clearer picture of how I might choose my major or research topic after enrolling.
  • I had always associated ICU with the humanities, but I now understand that the university also provides an excellent environment for studying the sciences in depth.
  • I think it's wonderful that students can take on a wide range of challenges across disciplines while also pursuing deep learning.
  • I had been struggling with various concerns about my academic path, but hearing such compelling stories really dispelled my anxieties. Both faculty and students spoke with such care and specificity--thank you very much.
  • I was able to understand what "liberal arts" really means. Even though I won't be the one studying there, I felt genuinely excited. (Parent)
  • I believe that the opportunity to "study math and science from the ground up while working toward a major" is a major point of distinction from other universities. I also hope more people come to recognize ICU as "a university where science students can truly grow and advance to the next level." (Parent)
