SDGs Promotion Office Nature Team Hosts "Post-Finals Bamboo Cutting Event"

Update: December 10, 2025

On November 20, 2025, the SDGs Promotion Office's Nature Team held its "Post-Finals Bamboo Cutting Event."
This event has been held regularly since the 2022 academic year with the goal of preserving ICU's rich ecosystem by having ICU students help cut bamboo in the campus bamboo grove areas. This time, nine ICU students participated.

On the day of the activity, participants first received a lecture on the campus's natural environment as well as the issues posed by invasive bamboo. They then moved to the bamboo grove next to the bus stop rotary, where a safety briefing was given on how to cut bamboo and important precautions to keep in mind during the work. Afterward, participants split into small groups, and with support from members of the Nature Team, began cutting bamboo.

The purpose of this project is to raise awareness of the current bamboo-related problems on campus and, through direct participation in management work, to help students personally understand the difficulty and importance of protecting the natural environment.

Student participants shared comments such as, "I'm glad I learned about ICU's bamboo-related issues and the proper way to cut bamboo," and "I enjoyed the cutting work." When ideas were solicited for how to make use of the harvested bamboo, students proposed a wide variety of possibilities, including making bamboo instruments, deodorizers, fans, tea ceremony tools, and holding a nagashi-somen (flowing noodles) event.
Drawing on these ideas, the team hopes to further develop initiatives to make effective use of the bamboo harvested at ICU as a resource.
