ICU in Numbers
Distinctive features of ICU in numbers: from education, internationality to campus life
Basic Information
Founded: 1953

ICU was established as a result of international cooperation inspired by a yearning for reconciliation following the end of World War II and a love of humanity.
The International Christian University pursues three commitments as expressed in the university name: International, Christian and Academic Commitments.
Number of students: 2,978

ICU is home to students from 53 countries and regions brimming with individuality that transcends national or cultural boundaries. We capitalize on our small-scale merits, which are not available to larger universities with tens of thousands of students, to create an educational environmental rooted in a unique culture that emphasizes dialogue, small-group education, and bilingualism.
College/Faculty 1 College, 1 Division

ICU has adopted a system of liberal arts education with majors in which all students apply to the College of Liberal Arts and don't have to specify a particular department, specialty, or major at the time of admission. Students choose their major after acquiring a broad foundation across arts and science disciplines because we believe this helps them cultivate creative skills based on an integrated knowledge of multiple fields.
Education
Choice of majors: 31

Students select from 31 majors at the end of their second year. At ICU, we offer subject courses that range from literature to physics, peace studies, and music and that are equivalent to those offered by specific faculties or departments at other universities. Furthermore, students are able to flexibly design their own educational experience by choosing either a single or double major or a major/minor route.
Ratio of faculty to students: 1:18

It is vital to offer classes with a small number of students in order to provide a well-rounded liberal arts education. Indeed, ICU is committed to maintaining its small-group education framework which enables us to interact individually with each and every student and encourage deep and meaningful dialogue.
Number of courses offered annually: 813

This is the number of courses we offer, excluding mathematics projects and health and physical education courses. This number is on a par with the very best liberal arts colleges in the United States.
Internationality
Number of non-Japanese faculty members: 38.6% of total faculty

As a general rule, we recruit full-time faculty openly on the international market because we expect the same diversity in faculty as in our student body. Our ratio of non-Japanese faculty is high by global standards and 90% of our Japanese faculty have overseas study or research experience.
Number of students opting for overseas study experience: 50%

Our learning opportunities also include the option to study overseas. Over half of our students choose to go overseas to study together with local students during their undergraduate career as a way of further expanding their future opportunities.
Multilingualism 2+1

ICU is home to students and faculty from all over the world, so, naturally, you hear many languages spoken around the campus. Embracing this environment, we have prepared a wide range of language programs and encourage students to improve their access to global opportunities by applying a 2+1 language structure (Japanese and English + 1 other language) to their studies.
Campus Life
Site: 620,000㎡

The size of the ICU campus is equivalent to 13 Tokyo Domes. The richly green campus provides a free and relaxed learning space, with classroom buildings and research facilities nestled in the Musashino woods, and the grass courtyard and small hill offering more greenery to enjoy. It is also a comfortable place to live, with student dormitories and faculty housing dotted around the campus. You can even spot various wild animals such as badgers and raccoons.
On-campus dormitories: 30% of students live on campus

Roughly 30 percent of our students live in on-campus undergraduate and post-graduate dormitories (10 buildings housing a total or approximately 900 people) where they get to experience living with students older and younger than themselves as well as international students.
Extra-curricular activities: Over 100 activities

ICU's liberal arts education is not confined to the classroom. We emphasize the importance of extra-curricular activities and offer a variety of options in the arts and sports. The ICU Festival and many other activities are planned and implemented primarily by the students themselves.
