    Shorinji Kempo

    Activities

Shorinji Kempo is one of the nine Japanese grand martial arts. Movements consist mainly of Goho (hard) techniques such as strikes and kicks and Juho (soft) techniques or defense against various grabs and throws. Shorinji Kempo emphasizes the development of the mind with mental Zen-like elements in addition to physical training.

Training consists of four main parts.

・Basics...Learning basic movements such as strikes and kicks
・Hokei... Training in pairs to practice patterns in self defense
・Randori...Practical application of Hokei techniques wearing Bogu (protective gear).
・Enbu...Form of demonstration with two performers alternating as attacker and defender in a six-part program of hard and soft techniques to a predetermined battle. Literally translated "show fight," it is the form usually performed at competitions.
