Update: July 15, 2016

ICU Professor Richiko Ikeda (major: media communication culture, gender sexuality studies, Japan studies) received the Association Award (inthe category of textbooks and books of enlightenment ) at the 46th Annual Convention of the Japan Communication Association held on June 11 (Sat) and 12 (Sun) for her literary book Nichijo kara kangaeru komyunikeshon gaku - media wo toshite manabu (communication studies from the perspective of daily life - learning through the media).

Overview of the publication

The objective of this book is to think about the meaning of communication studies through the analysis of various media. In this book, the term "media" is used in a broad sense, and not limited to the so-called 'mass media'. For example, a clock is a mechanical medium that lets us know the time and we might attempt a discussion by posing a question like, "What kind of world is this medium trying to link us with?" The process of finding an answer to the question will reveal various strains of modern society. The same can be true about the issue of waste. We can understand a lot of different things about it in the process of considering the garbage we generate almost every day as a medium. This book attempts to find answers to such questions as what communication is; what relationships are at the foundation of our daily life; and what relationships will we be able to build through objects and media that make up the world of our lives, and how to build those relationships.

Comment from Professor Ikeda

From the review of this book read out at the award ceremony of the Japan Communication Association convention, I understand the book received high acclaim for its sharp analysis of various problems in modern society from the perspective of communication studies. I am delighted that the points that were the special focus of my study were so appreciated and allowed the book to be judged deserving of this award.
