A Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Construction of Our New Physical Education Facilities was Held

Update: December 18, 2017

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on November 16 (Thur.) for the construction of our new physical education facilities, which will be built next to the physical education facilities that currently stand on our campus grounds. Attending the ceremony were around 50 people including related parties from our university and parties involved in the construction.

The new physical education facilities are being constructed in response to changes that were made to our university's physical education curriculum in April 2017. The new facilities will have roofed tennis courts (scheduled to be completed in April 2018), a new gymnasium, and a new swimming pool (scheduled to be completed in November 2018)*.

Reverend Shoko Kitanaka hosted the groundbreaking ceremony, which took place under a clear blue sky. As representatives of ICU, Kakutaro Kitashiro, Chair of the Board of Trustees; Junko Hibiya, President; Tetsuro Tomioka, Managing Trustee for General Affairs; and Ryoichi Arai, Managing Trustee for Financial Affairs, broke the ground, praying for the safe completion of the construction of the new physical education facilities. The ceremony ended with a benediction.

Following the ceremony, the parties moved to the Dining Hall, where a celebration gathering was held. Chair Kitashiro and President Hibiya addressed the people in attendance, expressing their hopes that the construction will be carried out safely and also touching upon the changes that were made to the physical education curriculum in April of this year. They also spoke of their hopes that the new physical education facilities would increase the opportunities for the students to think and learn about having a sound mind and body.

Furthermore, in the closing speech, Shin Takahashi, the Director of the Department of Health and Physical Education, spoke of how the students, more than anyone else, were overjoyed that new physical education facilities would be constructed. Director Takahashi also conveyed the commitment of the teaching staff of the Department of Health and Physical Education as well as everyone at ICU involved in the university's all-around education to provide even better instruction and guidance going forward.

* All of the names for the new physical education facilities are provisional names.
