Update: December 21, 2018

On Thursday, December 13, 2018, ICU invited Mr. Shinichiro Uchikubo, a Japanese massage therapist successfully working for the Boston Red Sox in Major League Baseball, and held a lecture for ICU students commemorating the completion of ICU's new physical education facilities at the seminar room of the new gymnasium. Entitled "How to Become Successful in Global Society," Mr. Uchikubo discussed how he captured the attention of the players and contributed to the team, which won the World Series in 2018.
In the first part of the lecture, in which Kaori Sato, Instructor by Contractual Appointment, Health and Physical Education Program at ICU, acted as a coordinator, Mr. Uchikubo introduced how to win the heart of another person, working outside Japan and the features of people who are successful overseas. "It is necessary for my job to build a relationship of trust to win the players' heart, as they won't even let you touch them without trust," said Mr. Uchikubo explaining how to win the hearts of others. "A relationship of trust cannot be built in a day, so it is important to continuously 'watch, care and be considerate" to grasp what the person needs at what timing by relentlessly observing the players' daily routines, movements in matches and even their daily life." He said such daily efforts built strong relationships of trust with the players and led to the significant result of the team's winning the World Series.

Subsequently, Mr. Uchikubo stressed that what is important in working overseas is communication. He mentioned the difference between talking and having communications, and said that he always closely observes the person and tries to grasp the person's tone of voice, expression, culture as well as how Americans think, and said that communication skills that will hold good even in business is made possible by recognizing that your "natural thinking" is different from your counterpart's and having the awareness to try and understand diversity of values.
At the closing of the lecture, Mr. Uchikubo emphasized that the athletes successful outside Japan were "people of character who can adapt to any environment."
In the second part, "Relaxation for Tomorrow's Success Practiced Even by Major Leaguers!" the venue moved to the main court of the new gymnasium, where Mr. Uchikubo introduced massages for finger tips and head as a way to condition autonomic nerves.
At the end of the lecture, Mr. Uchikubo mentioned the "Expanding Potential" in ICU's logo mark and encouraged ICU students to believe in their own potential and take on all kinds of challenges.
