Lecture Series by Global Corporate Executives: No.1 by Mr. Toshio Arima

Update: October 8, 2019

On Thursday, September 19, we held a lecture presentation at the auditorium of Diffendorfer Memorial Hall. The guest lecturer was Mr. Toshio Arima, an ICU's graduate who serves as the representative director of Global Compact Network Japan (GCNJ) and the senior advisor of Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd.

The lecture presentation was the first one of the lecture series in the "Responsible Global Corporate Executives and Financial Professionals Training Program" of the graduate school that started in April 2019, and it was held in the general education course "Capitalism and Society" that Visiting Professor Katsuhito Iwai teaches in Business major.

Mr. Arima talked about how he had come across the idea of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) and had gained a belief in management with CSR after starting working for Fuji Xerox, and introduced the outline of the United Nations Global Compact. He also talked about the way CSR was dynamically developing into the ideas of ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) and CSV (Creating Shared Value), and the meaning of CSR in management, based on his experience in working for a long time in the business world.

"What can enterprises, and we, do to make the world a little happier place to live in? Maybe we can find the answer for it in ICU's spirit of foundation." About eighty students listened attentively to Mr. Arima's question.

In the question-and-answer session after the lecture, students asked many questions, and Mr. Arima answered each of them politely in the conversation with Professor Iwai.

Mr. Arima kindly offered to donate all the honorarium for the lecture to support activities of the soccer club that he had belonged to while he had been a student of ICU.
