E-Week "ICU Biodiversity Walk" was held
Update: June 14, 2023

ICU SDGs Promotion Office is holding Environment-week (E-week) from "International Day for Biological Diversity" (May 22, 2023) to "World Environment Day" (June 5, 2023) for about two weeks.
"ICU Biodiversity Walk"
As the first event of E-week, Prof. Ryosuke Fujinuma, teaching in the field of Environmental Studies at ICU led a campus tour "ICU Biodiversity Walk" around the ICU campus.
This event took place during lunchtime on May 22, and was attended by about 40 students and staff. For about an hour, participants walked through wooded areas and bamboo groves, mainly on the west side of campus.Participants listened attentively to Professor Fujinuma's explanations about the ecosystems in each area and how the university is maintaining the areas.
Environmentally Friendly and Sustainable Circulation since the Edo period
The Mitaka Forest, where the ICU campus is located, has been maintained as a village forest since the Edo era. In addition to cutting down the trees, farmers in Mitaka collect fallen leaves in the fall and mix them with horse manure to make compost for their fields, creating an environmentally friendly and sustainable cycle. By having students cut bamboos in the bamboo grove and by installing insect nets on the trees to prevent oak wilt, ICU manages the forest together with the involvement of students and local community members. Students had opportunities to learn that a wide variety of living creatures are living right next to their classrooms in this precious forest, which is home to endangered species of plants and flowers such as golden orchid and epimedium , as well as Japanese raccoon dogs and badgers.

The University's SDGs initiatives are described in the following pages.
