Celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the Japanese Language Programs (JLP)
Update: January 29, 2024

Since first opening its doors to students in 1953, ICU has provided Japanese language courses in response to the diverse needs of its students, and the university celebrated the 70th anniversary of its Japanese Language Programs in 2023.
Back in 1953, ICU was the first Japanese university to provide credits for its Japanese language courses. In 1964, the university introduced the Special Japanese course for students who spoke Japanese at home but had not received their school education in Japanese. Since then, the Japanese Language Programs (JLP) has responded to the diverse needs of ICU students from various backgrounds. The university will continue to develop its Japanese language courses to meet with the changing times.
Comment from Ikumi Ozawa, Director, Japanese Language Programs
Starting in 1953 with 10 international students, JLP has developed into a program where currently 300 students from over 40 nations and from diverse backgrounds study each year. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the faculty and staff who have supported the JLP so far as well as the students who have participated in the program with such enthusiasm.
Please check the details in the link here for upcoming events aimed for students who have completed JLP as well as others involved in the program.
