This past fall (2023), ICU welcomed its 70th year anniversary and, with it, launched a campaign to create a college mascot.

A total of 41 designs were submitted by ICU students, ICU High students, faculty and staff, and of those, three were selected as finalists by the official mascot production committee. The final round was conducted via an online poll taken by ICU students, ICU High students, faculty and staff, and the winner of the competition was "Hachiro" designed by Mitsui Yutaro (College of Liberal Arts, 4th year, History major).

"Hachiro" is a mysterious creature that has protected the natural landscape of Nogawa for centuries, dating back to when Tokyo was still called Musashinokuni. It's mischievous and loves to play around. When ICU's campus transforms with the blossoming of sakura and gingko trees, the magic of the season is also said to change Hachiro's appearance! "Hachiro" was named after Dr. Hachiro Yuasa, the first president of ICU.

College Mascot Hachiro

With just a few touch-ups to the original design, our college mascot "Hachiro" was born! Moving forward, "Hachiro" will be joining the Public Relations Team to share the wonder and charm of ICU to even more people around the world. We look forward to introducing "Hachiro" to everyone through SNS and at Open Campus very soon.
