Comment on the award:
I am extremely honored and surprised that my book "India: Superpower of the Global South" has been selected for the Kashiyama Junzo Award. The excellent research and educational environment of my work place at International Christian University has enabled me to get this good fortune.
India is now the world's most populous country, and its economy is the fifth largest. Consequently, increasing number of Japanese companies are entering India to take advantage of its huge market. In the international community, India's role is also growing along with the complex global situation.
I have made a numerous visits for research to all the states in India for more than three decades, and witnessed the rapid growth of the country and deveopment of modern sectors like the IT industry. Also, I studied the lives of rural poor, which have not changed much for decades. In this book, I have tried to elucidate these aspects of "changing India" and "unchanging India."
Receiving this award encourages me to redouble my continuous efforts in research and education.
