Special Exhibition: "Surprises Galore: Meiji Period Ukiyo-e and the Encounter with New Culture from the West" at the ICU Hachiro Yuasa Memorial Museum

Update: January 17, 2025

A special exhibition titled "Surprises Galore: Meiji Period Ukiyo-e and the Encounter with New Culture from the West" is being held at the ICU Hachiro Yuasa Memorial Museum, located on our campus.

The Meiji period (1868-1912), following the long Edo period (1603-1868), was a time when Japan encountered new cultures, technology and values. After the opening of Japan (1854) and Meiji Restoration (1868), Japan aimed for equal diplomatic relationship with the western countries. During this time, the active acceptance of western culture, known as the "civilization and enlightenment" movement, advanced in various fields.
This exhibition features ukiyo-e, a popular form of information media born in the Edo period that continued to be appreciated during the Meiji period, introducing the public growing interest in new cultures and the historical background of the period. Additionally, the exhibition showcases daily use items from the time, such as lamps and inbande blue and white plates. Some ukiyo-e prints from the Museum collection are exhibited for the first time. And on show are ukiyo-e collections from Dr. M. William Steele, Professor Emeritus of our university, and Yokohama prints and maps from the ICU Library collection.
