Troyer Memorial Arts and Sciences Hall Receives the Encouragement Award at the "Wood City TOKYO Model Architecture Award"
Update: February 16, 2026

The Troyer Memorial Arts and Sciences Hall at International Christian University (Mitaka, Tokyo; President: Shoichiro Iwakiri) received the Encouragement Award at the "Wood City TOKYO Model Architecture Award," organized by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. The Wood City TOKYO Model Architecture Award honors innovative and model architectural works and wooden spaces in Tokyo--a major consumer of timber--that stimulate new demand for wood and explore new possibilities for its utilization.
Award-Winning Building: Troyer Memorial Arts and Sciences Hall
Completed in 2022 and opened for use in 2023, the Troyer Memorial Arts and Sciences Hall was jointly designed by Nihon Sekkei, Inc. and Kengo Kuma & Associates as an educational and research facility that fosters dialogue across academic disciplines. The building features a design that harmonizes with the university's "Campus Woodland." A massive approximately 7-meter cantilevered wooden eave and interior spaces composed of uniformly sized timber pieces create an environment that allows visitors to experience the warmth of wood. In addition, Himalayan cedar trees that originally stood on the construction site have been repurposed for room signage, interior maps, and furniture, reflecting a commitment to environmental consideration while preserving the memory of the university.
This award recognizes the building's effective use of timber and its architectural value in achieving both environmental performance and comfort.
