Special Exhibition "Unpacking Japanese Food Boxes" at ICU Hachiro Yuasa Memorial Museum

Update: May 14, 2017

A special exhibition titled "Unpacking Japanese Food Boxes" is held at ICU Hachiro Yuasa Memorial Museum from Tuesday, April 10 through Friday, July 6, 2018.

Food boxes are containers to carry food to eat on the go. They vary widely in types and forms, ranging from those for daily use to those for special gatherings such as cherry blossom viewing parties and leaf-peeping excursions. The special exhibition showcases 75 pieces of food boxes made in the Edo to Meiji/Taisho eras, including relevant materials and ukiyo-e woodblock prints. These exhibited food boxes include some pieces of "Sageju" (a set of multi-tier boxes with a handle, designed to contain food and drinking vessels), food boxes beautifully decorated with lacquer and sprinkled with gold or silver powder, as well as those made from lightweight materials and consisting of a set of boxes that can be compactly nested.
