The Top Winner of ICU Global Youth Essay Competition 2022 Participated in Open Campus Day

The top winner of ICU Global Youth Essay Competition 2022, Ms. Laura Zawora, and a guarantor used the prize of two round-trip airfare tickets from Poland to Tokyo, Japan to stay in Tokyo for a week and visit our Open Campus Day on July 22, 2023. After listening to a short introduction of ICU by staff, Ms. Zarowa was assisted by a current ICU student for a whole day. First, they toured the campus and participated in a model lecture "Where do Anthropologists look for Culture?" by Associate Professor Bernardo Enrique Brown (major: anthropology, global studies). Later, they visited Yuasa Hachiro Memorial Museum on campus. Lastly, President Shoichiro Iwakiri had a warm greeting session with Ms. Zarowa in his office. Associate Professor Senri Sonoyama (major: literature, Japan studies) who used to teach at a university in Poland also joined. The president made a gift of a book.
Ms. Zawora's comments
A journey to Japan was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I appreciate ICU for giving me this opportunity to visit Japan and ICU Open Campus Day. The campus tour by a current student was fantastic. I was impressed by the greenery of the vibrant wide campus. I plan to visit parks and museums in a few more days.
In the essay, I wrote about how a museum can be a solution to peacebuilding. I feel like art/artistic expressions have a special place in my life, that's one of the reasons behind this idea. In the future, I wish to work somehow in a museum and now figuring out what to study. When I learned about the later specialization system of ICU, I felt like taking courses from about 5 majors before declaring the single or double major I really wish to study in the 2nd year.
My message to future participants of the essay competition is that it's all about trying and taking risks. If you're afraid, you can still do it afraid. Try!
