2023年秋季入学式を挙行

9月1日（金）、大学礼拝堂において秋季入学式を挙行し、海外の高校や国内のインターナショナルスクールを卒業した学生をはじめ、交換留学協定校からの留学生など、学部・大学院合わせて315名の学生が本学に入学しました。
入学式は、参加者一同での讃美歌歌唱、オルバーグ, ジェレマイア L.宗務部長代行の祈祷で始まりました。続いて、スミス, アダム ランダル助教が「ルカによる福音書 第10 章 38-42 節」を朗読しました。
その後、献学以来の伝統に則り、学部・大学院の新入生一人一人の名前が読み上げられ、岩切正一郎学長より新入生へ、激励の式辞を送りました。そして、新入生代表が世界人権宣言の原則に立ち本学での学生生活を送ることを誓う「学生宣誓」を読み上げ、学生全員が「学生宣誓」に署名を行いました。
また、学生宣誓への深い理解とともに大学生活をスタートさせてほしいという願いから、ICU生が英語翻訳を手掛けた『ビジュアル版世界人権宣言』が新入生全員へ配布されました。そして、岩切正一郎学長が、新たに集った新入生へ激励の言葉を贈りました。

A warm welcome to all of you who are entering our College of Liberal Arts and our MA and PhD programs. At the same time, I extend my warmest regards to all your family members and friends who are joining us on screen.
According to the traditional Japanese calendar, Autumn began on 8 August this year. even though we have passed that date, the heat has continued and it is hard to think of this as Autumn.
How did you spend this past summer? According to the Washington Post, July 4 this year was the hottest day for the whole earth, certainly since 1979. We are told that it may have been the hottest day on earth in about 125,000 years.
At the end of July, the Secretary-general of the UN, Antonio Guterres, said that the era of global warming had ended and that "the era of global boiling had arrived".
It is said that "the era of global boiling" has been caused by the emission of greenhouse gasses on an enormous scale, brought on by human industrial activities. Especially since the industrial revolution, human society has placed incredible burdens on the natural world systems thereby damaging the global ecology whilst at the same time seeing remarkable materialistic developments. These developments have led to greater human satisfaction, bringing increasing comfort and pleasure for the time being. And yet the advances pursued so that those privileged enough to receive them can enjoy even greater pleasures and comfort have inflicted greater poverty and various health issues on others who share life on this planet with us. History offers so many examples of this. And now we are coming to realize that this pursuit of pleasure and comfort is inextricably linked to the creation of a threatening environment for future generations.
ICU was founded some 70 years ago and, at that time, it defined itself as "the university of tomorrow". This meant that the university would continue to challenge itself towards constant renewal, while remaining determined not to be satisfied with the status quo, and to project itself into the unknown future. There has been no change to this ambition: we are here to use our education platform to nurture peace builders who honor freedom, human rights and democracy.
But I feel as though an additional element needs to be added to our vision of the "university of tomorrow", namely our mission to be the "university that takes responsibility for tomorrow seriously".
The learning and human relationships that you will experience at ICU will enrich each of your lives in so many ways. This will be an important experience for you, providing you with an invaluable foundation for the rest of your lives. At the same time, it is an experience that will sharpen your intellect and sensitivity, thereby enabling you to deepen, broaden, and explore knowledge about the actions you should take, not only for your own life, but for the future of humanity as a whole and for the natural world.
It is my hope that, availing yourself of the dialogue, diversity and critical thinking that lie at the heart of ICU's liberal arts education, each of you will become a well-rounded peace-builder in your everyday life and in your global political and economic relationships.
The learning and research you begin today at the university require evidence-based and logical thinking. However, that is not all. In the search for logic and rationality, it may seem, at first glance, that personal and subjective elements such as your personal impressions, sensations and feelings are being excluded. However, from the perspective of humanity, the personal and subjective have great value. Generative AI tools such as Chat GPT, which have been a hot topic in society for some time now, cannot speak of impressions, experiences, or memories as their own. Each human being needs to speak of what he or she feels, as this then leads to a deepening awareness of the universal.
Through your campus life at ICU, I hope that you will find just such a generous and liberating spirit to facilitate your understanding of the world as you pursue your logical thinking.
The world is always full of unexpected and unforeseen events. And university education is sometimes called upon to nurture individuals who can respond to such unexpected events and changes. Such requests are premised on an assumption that unexpected events that we are required to deal with will come from somewhere outside.
Yet, we can think of such so-called unexpected or unanticipated episodes in a different way. The university is a place that nurtures people who create the unexpected and unanticipated in a positive sense. We can say that learning and research shine brightest when they awaken and surprise a world that has become sleepily content with old habits.
Your intellectual curiosity is full of creative energy. It is my hope that you will learn the academic art of transforming your inner energy into a new form.
From today, you are all members of the ICU community. I am sure that, until yesterday, you were harnessing various dreams and images that arise from the name of ICU.
But from today, various realistic and concrete elements will be added.
On some occasions, what you have dreamed of under the name of ICU may become more colorful and real. At other times, the elements of your dream may be replaced by a different reality than that which you had expected.
I hope that, through these experiences, you will listen out to what is being said to you. Even if part-time jobs may take up some of your time as a student, your time at university still represents a privileged time when you are free from having to work for a living. As we heard in the Bible reading from "Luke 10, verses 38-42" earlier, sometimes doing nothing but focusing on the Word of Truth is also an important action to take when others keep themselves busy working for the daily interest. It is my prayer that in your endeavors to pursue the question of what is most important in your life, each one of you will be able to listen out to the voice that speaks to your own wisdom and will be richly blessed in your interpersonal relationships, thereby helping you to become someone committed to the building of a better tomorrow.
教養学部ならびに大学院博士前期課程・後期課程新入生の皆さん、ご入学おめでとうございます。また、スクリーンを通してご参加くださっているご家族、ご親戚、ご友人のみなさまにも、心よりお祝い申し上げます。
日本では、伝統的な暦に従うと、今年は8月8日から、季節は秋になっています。とはいえ、8月8日を過ぎても、とても秋とは思えない、暑い毎日が続いています。
この夏をみなさんはどのように過ごされたでしょうか？ ワシントン・ポスト紙によると、2023年7月4日は、少なくとも1979年以来、地球が一番暑かった日でした。もしかすると、過去12万5千年のなかで一番暑い日だったのかもしれないそうです。7月末に、グテーレス国連事務総長は、地球温暖化の時代は終わり、「 地球沸騰時代（the era of global boiling）が到来した」という声明を発表しました。
「地球沸騰時代」の一因には、人間の産業活動によって大量に排出される温室効果ガスがあると言われています。
人間社会は、とくに産業革命以降、自然界のシステムに負荷をかけ、地球環境を悪化させながら、物質的に大きく発展してきました。その発展は、今をより一層快適にすることで人に満足をもたらしてきました。その快適さを享受できる人々がさらなる快適さを求めて行う開発は、今、という同時代を生きている別の人々には、貧困や健康被害をもたらしていました。歴史は常にそれを示しています。今、私たちはそれに加えて、その快適さの追求が、未来の人々にとって脅威となる環境を生み出すことと表裏一体の関係にあることに、ますます深く気づいています。
ICUは70年前に献学されましたが、そのときに、みずからを「明日の大学」と定義しました。それは、つねにみずからを革新し続け、決して不動性のなかで完結することなく、未知の領域へ自分を投企する大学である、ということを意味していました。そのときに掲げた目的は今も変わっていません。自由と人権と民主主義を大切にするpeace-builderを、教育を通じて育てることです。
「明日の大学」に、今は、もう一つ新しい意味が加わっていると私は思います。それは「未来に対して責任を持つ大学」という意味です。
これからみなさんがICUで経験する学びと人間関係は、みなさん一人ひとりの人生に、多くの人間的な豊かさをもたらします。それは自分の人生の基礎となる大切な経験です。同時に、それは、自分の人生のためだけではなく、人間全体と自然界の未来のために自分が取るべき行動について、知識を深め、広げ、探求するための知性と感性をより研ぎ澄まし鋭敏にする経験でもあります。
ICUのリベラルアーツ教育が大切にする、対話、多様性、批判的思考を通じて、みなさんが、日常生活のレベルで、あるいはまた、グローバルな政治的、経済的な関係のなかで、豊かな人間性を備えたpeace-builderとなることを私は願っています。
今日からみなさんが始める大学や大学院での学問や研究においては、エビデンスに基づいた論理的な思考が求められます。とはいえ、それが全てではありません。論理性や合理性を求められると、そこからは、一見、印象や感覚や感情といった、個人的で主観的なものは排除されているように見えます。けれども、人間性という観点からみると、個人的で主観的なものには大きな価値があります。しばらく前から社会で話題になっているChat GPTなどの生成AIは、自分のものとしての印象や経験や思い出を語ることはできません。人間は一人ひとり、自分が感じていることを語りながら、普遍的なものへの認識を深めていきます。
ICUでのキャンパス・ライフを通じて、世界を感受するしなやかさのなかで論理的な思考の力を育んで欲しいと思います。
世界は常に、思いがけないことや想定外の出来事に満ちています。そして大学教育には、予想外の出来事や変化に対応できる人材を育てるように、と求められることがあります。このような要請は、予想外の出来事が、どこか外からやってきて、人はそれを受け止めて対処するという態度を前提しています。
この、予想外のもの、思いがけないもの、については、別の言い方をすることも可能でしょう。大学は、良い意味で想定外のもの、思いがけないものを作り出す人を育てる場所でもあるのです。学問や研究は、習慣のなかで眠り込んでいる世界に、目覚めと驚きをもたらすときに、最も輝きます。
みなさんの知的な好奇心は、創造的なエネルギーに満ちています。その、まだ形のないエネルギーを、新しい形へ変換（transform）していくための学術的なアートをぜひ身につけて欲しいと思います。
今日からみなさんは、ICUという共同体のメンバーです。このICUという名前のなかに、昨日までみなさんは、さまざまな夢やイメージを充当してきたと思います。
今日からは、そこに、現実的で具体的な要素が入ってきます。
ICUという名前のもとで、あるときは、夢みていたものがいっそう多彩な色彩を帯びて現実化していくかも知れません。あるときは、期待していたのとは違う現実が夢のエレメントと置き換わるかも知れません。
それらの経験を通じて、みなさんは、自分へ何が語られているのか、ということにも、よく耳を澄ませてください。学生時代は、たとえアルバイトで時間を取られることがあっても、やはり、労働からは解放されている、特権的な期間です。さきほどの聖書朗読（「ルカによる福音書」10章、38-42節）にもあるように、人が世事に役立つ形で立ち働いているときに、何もせず、ただ〈真実〉の言葉に心を向けていることも、大切な行動であることがあります。自分の人生にとって何が一番大切なことか、みずからの知恵へ語りかける声に耳を傾けながら、みなさん一人ひとり、豊かな人間関係をつくり、より良い明日を創る人となるよう願って、お祝いの言葉といたします。
